In the world of medical education, theoretical knowledge is only as good as its practical application. Recognizing this, the NMC made it compulsory for Foreign Medical Graduates to complete a 12-month clinical internship in the country where they obtained their degree before returning to India.

How Georgia Handles the Internship

In Georgia, the MBBS (MD) program is a 6-year course. The entire 6th year is dedicated to this mandatory clinical internship. This means you do not have to graduate and then struggle to find a hospital to accept you for an internship; it is built directly into your academic timeline.

What Do You Actually Do in the 6th Year?

During the 6th year, students are rotated through various departments in university-affiliated hospitals. Key rotations include:

• Internal Medicine
• General Surgery
• Pediatrics
• Obstetrics and Gynecology (OB/GYN)
• Emergency Medicine
• Psychiatry

Under the strict supervision of senior attending physicians, students are expected to take patient histories, perform basic diagnostic procedures, and assist in minor surgeries.

The Language Aspect

While the academic curriculum is entirely in English, patient interaction in Georgian hospitals requires basic knowledge of the local language. Universities teach the Georgian language during the first three years of the course specifically to prepare students for these clinical rotations. By the time you reach your 6th year, you will be fluent enough to converse with local patients comfortably.

Is it Valid in India?

Yes. The Georgian 6th-year internship perfectly aligns with the NMC's requirement for a 12-month continuous internship in the same foreign institution. Upon returning to India and clearing the FMGE/NExT, you may still have to undergo an Indian internship as per the latest local state medical council rules, but the Georgian internship secures your primary eligibility.
