Does Bangladesh Medical Degree Require an Internship in India?

The Double Internship Confusion

One of the most heavily debated topics among Indian medical students planning to study abroad is the mandatory clinical internship. The NMC 2021 Gazette brought significant changes to how Foreign Medical Graduates (FMGs) complete their training.

Rule 1: The Internship in the Host Country

According to the NMC, you must complete a mandatory 12-month clinical internship in the same country where you earned your degree. This means after completing your 5-year academic course in Bangladesh, you must stay for one more year and complete your internship in the hospital attached to your medical college (e.g., Dhaka National Hospital or Enam Medical College Hospital).

Rule 2: The CRMI in India

Once you complete your degree and internship in Bangladesh, you return to India and appear for the FMGE (or NExT) exam. Upon passing, are you required to do another internship? Yes. The NMC mandates that all FMGs undergo a 12-month Compulsory Rotating Medical Internship (CRMI) in an Indian medical college or hospital to familiarize themselves with the Indian healthcare system and rural health protocols.

Is This a Disadvantage?

While doing a 'double internship' (one in Bangladesh, one in India) means an extra year of training, it is actually a massive advantage. Your clinical skills will be far superior to your peers, having treated diverse patient populations in two different countries. Furthermore, Bangladesh's disease profile perfectly mirrors India's, making your transition seamless.
