Can Indian Students Study MBBS in Nepal without NEET?

Every year, thousands of Indian students who fail to secure a qualifying score in NEET look for alternatives. A common question we receive at Nile Education is: "Can I just go to Nepal to study MBBS without clearing NEET?" Let's break down the legalities and reality of this situation.

The Short Answer

No. If you plan to practice medicine in India, you cannot study MBBS in Nepal (or anywhere else abroad) without qualifying NEET.

1. The National Medical Commission (NMC) Rules

According to the NMC (formerly MCI) gazette notifications regarding Foreign Medical Graduates (FMGs):

• Any Indian citizen seeking to acquire a primary medical qualification from an institution outside India must qualify the NEET-UG exam.
• The NEET qualification is valid for three years from the date of declaration of results for the purpose of seeking admission abroad.
• If you complete an MBBS degree abroad without having qualified NEET before taking admission, you will not be allowed to appear for the FMGE/NExT screening test, and thus, you can never get a license to practice in India.

2. The Medical Education Commission (MEC) Nepal Rules

Even if a student declares they never want to practice in India and want to practice in the UK or USA, the Nepalese government has strict entry barriers. The MEC of Nepal states that a foreign candidate must either:

1. Have qualified the national medical entrance examination of their home country (i.e., NEET for Indians). OR
2. Must appear for and pass the MECEE-BL examination conducted by Nepal.

Therefore, you cannot simply take admission directly into a private college in Nepal using only your 12th board marks. You must cross the entrance examination hurdle.
