Education Loans for MBBS in Nepal: A Complete Guide
With the total cost of MBBS in Nepal ranging between ₹50 Lakhs to ₹80 Lakhs (including hostel and miscellaneous expenses), funding the education out-of-pocket is challenging for many middle-class Indian families. Fortunately, Indian banks provide robust education loan schemes for students pursuing medical degrees abroad.
Will Banks Finance MBBS in Nepal?
Yes. Since Nepal's medical colleges are recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO) and strictly comply with the National Medical Commission (NMC) 2021 Gazette, Indian banks readily approve education loans. Public sector banks (like SBI, PNB, Bank of Baroda) and private lenders (like HDFC Credila, Avanse) all cover MBBS in Nepal.
Types of Education Loans
1. Unsecured Loans (Without Collateral)
For amounts up to ₹7.5 Lakhs, banks provide unsecured loans. However, given the fee structure in Nepal, this amount is rarely sufficient. Some private NBFCs (like HDFC Credila) may offer unsecured loans up to ₹20-40 Lakhs based on the co-applicant's (parents') high income and excellent CIBIL score, but the interest rates are significantly higher (11% - 13.5%).
2. Secured Loans (With Collateral)
For loans exceeding ₹7.5 Lakhs, public sector banks strictly require tangible collateral (residential property, non-agricultural land, fixed deposits, or LIC policies).
- Loan Limit: Up to ₹1.5 Crores (covering 100% of the tuition, hostel, and travel expenses).
- Interest Rates: Lower, generally between 8.5% to 10.5%.
- Margin Money: For loans above ₹4 Lakhs, there is usually a 15% margin (meaning the bank funds 85% of the total cost, and parents fund 15%).
Crucial Documents Required
To ensure smooth loan processing, you must have the following documents ready:
- From the Student: KYC documents, 10th & 12th Marksheets, NEET Scorecard.
- From the University: Official Admission Letter, Detailed Fee Structure (stamped by the university), and University Bank Account Details (SWIFT code).
- From the Co-Applicant (Parents): KYC, Last 6 months bank statements, Last 2 years ITR (Income Tax Returns), Salary Slips or Business Proof.
- For Collateral: Original property title deeds, approved building plans, and a valuation report by a bank-approved engineer.
The Disbursement Process
Banks do not disburse the loan amount into the parent's account. The tuition and hostel fee portions are remitted directly to the university's official bank account in Nepal via SWIFT/Wire transfer at the beginning of each academic year.
