Complete Guide to BPKIHS Entrance Exam for Indians

The B.P. Koirala Institute of Health Sciences (BPKIHS) in Dharan, Nepal, is arguably the most coveted medical institution in the country for Indian students. Established as an Indo-Nepal joint venture, it offers a curriculum heavily aligned with Indian standards, massive clinical exposure, and an exceptionally high FMGE passing rate.

The New Reality: MECEE-BL

Historically, BPKIHS conducted its own independent entrance examination, which was highly popular among Indian students from Bihar, UP, and West Bengal. However, under the centralized medical education framework implemented by the Medical Education Commission (MEC) of Nepal, all admissions to BPKIHS (including foreign quotas) are now routed through the centralized MECEE-BL (Medical Education Commission Entrance Examination for Bachelor Level).

Seat Matrix for Foreign Nationals

BPKIHS reserves a specific percentage of its seats for foreign nationals, predominantly filled by Indian students. The competition for these seats is fierce.

• Total MBBS Seats: Usually around 100-115 (subject to annual MEC review).

Admission Pathways for Indians

Pathway 1: Writing the MECEE-BL (Recommended)

Indian students can directly apply and appear for the MECEE-BL exam held in Nepal. Scoring high on this exam puts you in the primary merit list for foreign nationals. Since BPKIHS is the top choice for almost every applicant, you need a top percentile score to secure a seat here.

Pathway 2: Using NEET Scores

The MEC permits Indian candidates to apply using their valid NEET scores. However, the seat allocation protocol usually prioritizes candidates who appeared for the MECEE-BL. Only if foreign quota seats remain vacant after the MECEE-BL merit list is exhausted, are candidates with NEET scores considered. Warning: BPKIHS seats almost never remain vacant for NEET-only applicants. If you want BPKIHS, you must write the MECEE-BL.
