How to Pay Medical College Fees in Nepal: Installments vs Lumpsum

Managing the finances for a 5.5-year medical degree is a significant undertaking. When Indian students secure admission for MBBS in Nepal, one of the most common concerns parents have is how the tuition fees must be paid. Do they need to pay ₹60 Lakhs upfront? Absolutely not. Medical colleges in Nepal offer flexible payment structures.

The Standard Installment Structure

Almost all private medical colleges in Nepal allow international students to pay their tuition fees in installments. However, the structure is heavily front-loaded.

Typically, the total tuition fee is divided into 4 or 5 annual installments, but the first installment is always the largest.

Example: Kathmandu Medical College (Total ₹54 Lakhs)

• 1st Year (At Admission): ₹27,00,000 (50% of the total fee)
• 2nd Year: ₹9,00,000
• 3rd Year: ₹9,00,000

The Lumpsum Payment Advantage

If parents have the liquidity to pay the entire 4.5-year tuition fee upfront during the first year, many colleges in Nepal offer a significant Lumpsum Discount.

For instance, if a college's total fee is ₹60,000,000 via installments, they might offer a discounted rate of ₹55,00,000 to ₹57,00,000 if paid entirely upfront. This can save parents several lakhs of rupees.

How is the Payment Made?

Payments are highly transparent and must be made via official banking channels to comply with both Indian (FEMA/RBI) and Nepalese regulations.

• Demand Draft (DD): Most commonly, colleges accept DDs drawn in favor of the medical college, payable at Kathmandu or the college's respective city.
• SWIFT Bank Transfer: Direct wire transfer from an Indian bank account to the university's official bank account in Nepal.
• Cash payments for tuition fees are strictly prohibited and illegal.
