Decoding the European MD Curriculum

When you enroll for "MBBS" in Georgia, you are technically enrolling in a European Medical Doctor (MD) program. This program is internationally recognized and spans exactly 6 years, fully complying with the NMC 2021 Gazette guidelines. Let’s break down exactly what you will study year by year.

Phase 1: Basic Sciences (Years 1 & 2)

The first two years are strictly preclinical. You will spend most of your time in classrooms, lecture halls, and anatomy labs. The focus is on understanding the normal functioning of the human body.

• Year 1: Anatomy (the most crucial subject), Medical Physics, Biology, General Chemistry, Medical Genetics, and Introduction to Georgian Language.
• Year 2: Physiology, Histology, Biochemistry, Immunology, Microbiology, and continued Georgian language training.

Note: Passing your Georgian language exams in these two years is critical, as you will need the language to interact with patients in later years.

Phase 2: Pre-Clinical & Paraclinical Sciences (Year 3)

The third year acts as a bridge between the classroom and the hospital. You begin to study diseases and their effects on the body.

• Year 3: Pathology, Pharmacology (learning about drugs), Pathophysiology, Topographic Anatomy, and Introduction to Clinical Diagnostics (learning how to take patient history and perform physical exams).

Phase 3: Clinical Rotations (Years 4 & 5)

This is where the real excitement begins. Your classes shift from the university campus to affiliated teaching hospitals.

• Year 4 & 5: Internal Medicine, General Surgery, Pediatrics, Obstetrics & Gynecology (OBGYN), Neurology, Psychiatry, Ophthalmology (Eyes), Otorhinolaryngology (ENT), Infectious Diseases, and Dermatology.

During these rotations, you will follow attending physicians on ward rounds, observe surgeries, and interact with patients (using your Georgian language skills).

Phase 4: The Internship (Year 6)

The final year is almost entirely practical. You act as a junior doctor (intern) in the hospital. You will rotate through the major departments (Medicine, Surgery, Pediatrics, OBGYN) taking on real responsibilities under strict supervision. This hands-on experience is what prepares you for the FMGE/USMLE exams.

Exams and Grading

Georgian universities use the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS). You need to accumulate 360 ECTS credits over 6 years to graduate. Exams are held at the end of each semester (Winter and Spring) and usually consist of oral vivas, written MCQs, and practical OSCE (Objective Structured Clinical Examination) stations.
