The Golden Question: Is NEET Compulsory?

One of the most frequently asked questions we receive at Nile Education is: "My NEET score is very low, or I haven't cleared NEET. Can I still study MBBS in Georgia?"

The straightforward answer is: If you intend to return to India to practice medicine as a registered doctor, NEET qualification is absolutely mandatory.

Why NEET is Mandatory

In 2018, the Medical Council of India (now the National Medical Commission - NMC) made it compulsory for all Indian citizens wishing to pursue medical education abroad to qualify for the NEET-UG exam. This rule was heavily reinforced in the NMC 2021 Gazette.

If you take admission in a Georgian university without qualifying for NEET, the NMC will not issue an eligibility certificate, and you will not be allowed to sit for the FMGE/NExT screening test upon your return. Consequently, you will never get a license to practice in India.

What Does "NEET Qualified" Mean?

You do not need a sky-high NEET score (like 600+) to go to Georgia. You simply need to "Qualify" for the exam. The qualifying cutoff changes every year but generally hovers around the 50th percentile for General category students (approx. 130-160 marks) and the 40th percentile for reserved categories (approx. 105-130 marks).

What if I Want to Settle Abroad?

There is a rare loophole. If a student explicitly signs a legal affidavit stating they have no intention of ever returning to India to practice medicine, some Georgian universities might grant admission based purely on 12th-grade PCB marks. These students typically aim to clear the USMLE or PLAB and settle in the US or UK.

However, Nile Education strictly advises against this. Life is unpredictable. Having your NEET qualification ensures that the doors to your home country remain open permanently.

Validity of the NEET Score

The NMC has ruled that for the purpose of taking admission abroad, a NEET-UG scorecard is valid for three years from the date of declaration of results. This is highly beneficial for students who took a gap year but now wish to apply to Georgia.
