When Indian students hear "Nepal," they immediately picture the snow-capped peaks of Mount Everest and freezing temperatures. While this is true for the high Himalayas, the reality of the climate where medical universities are located is vastly different. If you are planning to pursue MBBS in Nepal, understanding the weather will help you pack smart and adapt quickly.

The Geography of Medical Colleges

Nepal is geographically divided into three regions: the Himalayan region (North), the Hilly region (Middle), and the Terai region (South, bordering India).

Almost 90% of the medical colleges in Nepal are located in the Hilly (Kathmandu, Pokhara) or Terai (Birgunj, Nepalgunj, Bharatpur) regions. None of the major medical colleges are situated in the extreme cold, high-altitude Himalayan zones.

Climate Breakdown by Region

1. The Terai Region (Birgunj, Nepalgunj, Janakpur)

Colleges like Nepalgunj Medical College and National Medical College (Birgunj) are located here. The climate is identical to North India (UP/Bihar).

• Summers (April-June): Hot and humid, temperatures can reach 35°C - 40°C.
• Monsoons (July-Sept): Heavy rainfall.
• Winters (Dec-Feb): Cool and foggy, dropping to 7°C - 10°C, but rarely freezing.

2. The Hilly Region (Kathmandu, Pokhara, Dharan)

Colleges like KIST Medical College, Manipal (Pokhara), and BPKIHS (Dharan) enjoy a much more pleasant, temperate climate.

• Summers: Extremely pleasant, rarely crossing 30°C. You will rarely need an AC.
• Winters: Cold, with nighttime temperatures dropping to 2°C - 5°C. It gets chilly, but it does not snow in Kathmandu or Pokhara valleys.
