Weather in Georgia: Surviving Winters as an Indian Student
Adapting to the European Climate
For Indian students accustomed to scorching summers and mild winters, moving to Eastern Europe can seem intimidating. While countries like Russia experience brutal, sub-zero conditions (-20°C to -30°C), the weather in Georgia is much more temperate and forgiving.
The Four Seasons in Georgia
Georgia experiences four distinct seasons, making it a beautiful place to live:
- Spring (March to May): Pleasant and blooming. Temperatures range from 10°C to 20°C.
- Summer (June to August): Warm and sunny. Temperatures hover around 25°C to 35°C. It feels very similar to a mild Indian summer.
- Autumn (September to November): Cool and colorful. Temperatures drop to 10°C to 15°C.
- Winter (December to February): Cold and crisp. Temperatures in major cities like Tbilisi and Batumi usually range from 0°C to 5°C.
Do You Need to Worry About the Snow?
Unlike Russia, heavy snowfall in the major educational hubs (Tbilisi and Batumi) is rare. You will see snow, but it rarely accumulates enough to disrupt daily life. (However, if you visit the mountainous regions of Gudauri for a weekend trip, you will find massive amounts of snow for skiing!)
How Infrastructure Protects You
You will only ever feel the cold when you are walking outside on the streets. Every indoor environment in Georgia is heavily climate-controlled:
- Central Heating: All university buildings, classrooms, libraries, hostels, and private apartments are equipped with 24/7 central heating. Inside, you will comfortably walk around in a t-shirt.
- Transport: The Metro, buses, and taxis are all fully heated.
Packing Tips for Indian Students
Do not panic and buy expensive winter gear in India. The heavy jackets sold in India are often not designed for European wind-chill.
We recommend carrying a basic jacket and some thermal wear from India for your initial arrival. Once you reach Georgia, you can buy high-quality, weather-appropriate winter coats, waterproof boots, and gloves from local brands at much cheaper prices.
